Simon Gronowski was born in Brussels on October 12, 1931. His mother and sister, seven years his senior, died in Auschwitz. His father died in despair on July 9, 1945.

Simon was eleven years old when he was arrested on March 17, 1943, thrown into a Gestapo cellar on Avenue Louise in Brussels, detained for a month in the Dossin barracks in Mechelen and deported on April 19, 1943 in a cattle car of the 20th convoy carrying 1,600 Jews from Mechelen (Belgium) to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.

Miraculously, he jumped off the train and escaped.

All because his parents were born Jewish.

In 1945, Simon finds himself alone in the world...
