Pillars of the Earth
With its CeCiL’s Box project, Cercle Cité welcomes creations in one of its windows on rue du Curé. This project aims to present varied and original interventions to the public, and is also a way to support local creation by offering visibility to guest artists. These interventions are visible 7 days a week, day and night.
Fascinated by the peculiar, Julie Wagener creates compelling and meticulous images dotted with a hint of mystery. She borrows visual and narrative cues from the vast repertoire of art history and eerie folklore, and weaves them into a thick carpet of mysticism and personal comments about contemporary society. Her visceral imagery leaves us with both a feeling of disassociation and strange familiarity.
Despite of working in the deeply traditional technique that is the art of stained glass, Elora de Pape is able to create a distinctly personal visual vocabulary. Rich in symbolism and highly poetic, she infuses her work with contemporary sensibilities as to make it part of our present times. A harmonised reciprocity between drawing, painting and the material itself, culminates in a striking display of light and colour.
Conceived by Wagener and brought into existence by de Pape, Pillars of the Earth is a take on the current state of the humain condition and the society we live in. It is a reflexion on power, ethics, and defiance in a frightening, distressing and dysfunctional system. Presenting themselves as bright, colourful and transparent but nevertheless highly problematic in their present form, four key elements of the ever so complex structure that is modern day society, are questioned on their integrity, sustainability and their over all impact on mankind and the planet. These concepts often appear abstract and futile, but once you see the whole picture, they reveal themselves to be in our image.
As an alternative to the usual opening, we invite you to meet-up with the artist in front of the CeCiL's Box on Thursday 29th October at 12:00.
